New Junior Social Tennis Session
A new one-hour slot for Junior Social Tennis has been earmarked to give older children on the junior tennis coaching programme an opportunity to practice what they’re learning.
The session from 5.30pm to 6.30pm every term-time from Wednesday 1st May 2019 will be held until this year’s junior coaching programme completes at the end of September.
Supervised by Club members, the session enables the youngsters to enjoy playing tennis with friends of a similar age. Plus, a short American tournament will be held every month for competitive doubles play in a light-hearted environment.
Secondary school-age children who aren’t on this year’s coaching programme are also welcome to come along and join in the fun. Keen players are very welcome to stay on beyond 6.30pm and join in the Club’s regular members’ social tennis
evening. For further information, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Hot weather challenge for this year’s Goostrey Open Junior Tournament
Nine boys competed for two trophies in this year’s Goostrey Open Junior Tournament, making light work of playing in brilliant sunshine and high temperatures.
Watched by parents and other family members, the youngsters played well and demonstrated a mature attitude to the competitive event. All but one has been on
the Goostrey Tennis Club junior coaching programme, and several are continuing to develop their tennis at the Wednesday Junior Social session from 5.30pm to 6.30pm during term time.
The U12 competition on Sunday July 8th was won by Zach Bennett, with Harry Flanagan coming second and Charles Lloyd winning the bronze medal. Other competitors who took part in the round robin tournament were Joe Warburton, Will Green, and Franklyn Tate.
Having played for nearly two hours, Zach Bennett then took a short break in the shade before gamely entering the U16 competition, which was two rounds of a normal set each and a tie-break when the score went to 5-5. Zach won his first
round against Freddy Lloyd in a needle-match tie-break, before going on to beat finalist Luke Warburton to win the U16 event as well as the U12. Luke won the silver medal, Freddy the bronze, and Sam Upton was 4th.
The trophies will be presented at the Club’s Presentation Evening after the AGM in
the New Year. Thanks to all the families who supported the tournament and cheered the boys on in the heat.
The adult Goostrey Open is ongoing, with a finals day planned for Sunday 23rd September 2018
